How To Claim Your USA Mega Millions Winnings

The method you’ll use to claim your winnings will be determined by how you purchased your ticket:

  • Purchased online: If you purchased your ticket online, you’ll usually be notified of winnings automatically and it will be deposited into your bank account. This applies to playing via the official Mega Millions system that’s available in certain US states, as well as lottery agents that enable you to play from around the world. For larger prizes there is often a more elaborate process and you may even have to travel to claim your prize in person if you win the jackpot.
  • Purchased from brick and mortar retailers: If you purchased your ticket from a licensed retailer, and the win is less than $600, you should be able to claim the money from a retailer. For prizes greater than $600, you can claim this from local claim centers or state lottery offices. Regardless of the amount, you’ll need to claim your prize in the same state you purchased your ticket in. If you won the Mega Millions Jackpot, you’ll have to claim your winnings in person from the headquarters of your state lottery. It is important to sign the back of your winning ticket, and treat it as cash. Safe keeping is vital until you claim your prize so someone doesn’t have the opportunity to claim your prize as their own.

Odds of Winning The USA Mega Millions

Overall, your chances of walking away with any of these prizes are 1 in 24.

How Do You Win Mega Millions?

To play the Mega Millions, you can either play Quick Pick or Easy Pick, or select the numbers yourself. If you choose to select the numbers yourself, you’ll have to select six numbers from two separate pools of numbers:

  • The first pool requires you to select five numbers between 1 and 70
  • Then you’ll pick 1 number (the Gold Mega ball) between 1 and 25

In order to win the jackpot, you need to match all six winning numbers that are selected during the draw.

FAQs

What time does the USA Mega Millions draw take place?

The Mega Millions draw takes place twice weekly, once on a Tuesday and once on a Friday. Both draws take place at 11pm ET. Drawings are held at WSB-TV in Atlanta, Georgia.

When is the cut off time for the USA Mega Millions tickets?

Mega Millions tickets can be purchased up to 15 minutes before each scheduled drawing.

How long do you have to claim USA Mega Millions winnings?

Winners in most states have 90 days or more to claim a Mega Millions prize. Each state has its own guidelines so your window of opportunity can be as long as a year, but check with your local lottery office to ensure you don’t wait too long. Also, there may be a specific period in which you need to choose between cash and annuity payments for jackpot payouts.

What happens when no-one claims their winnings?

Any Mega Millions winnings that aren’t claimed in time, will go back into the prize pool. Each participating state will get all their money back according to their contribution’s value. Unclaimed prize money typically remains in the state’s lottery fund.

Can foreigners play the USA Mega Millions?

You don’t need to be a US citizen or resident to play the USA Mega Millions. You can play locally if you’re a tourist in the country, or you can use online lottery sites to help you take part in the game. When playing using a US-purchased ticket, winnings will have to be claimed in the same state as where you purchased your ticket.

How much tax do you pay on Mega Millions?

The USA has a federal tax rate of 37% and the IRS takes a minimum of 24% withholding tax upfront on lottery winnings. These rules apply regardless of whether you choose your payout over a period of time or as a one time payout but the implementation will affect how much money you receive in the end.

However, tax brackets shift over time, making it hard to calculate exactly how the payout would be made.

Furthermore, when playing from another country you may need to pay tax on any money paid into your bank account after a win. Talk to a tax lawyer for advice on how to keep within the law while paying as little as possible, so you can enjoy your money optimally.
