During National Lottery Week, stories of life-changing wins and the people behind them take center stage. One such tale that stands out is that of Armando Vidal, a former Santa Clarita resident who transformed his life with a $1 million lottery win this April.
Vidal’s journey from homelessness to financial freedom is nothing short of remarkable. Before his big win, he was living on the streets in San Luis Obispo. His luck changed when he decided to purchase two Triple Red777 scratchers at Sandy’s Deli and Liquor, a store he frequently visited. It was there that Vidal’s life would take a turn, thanks to the support of store manager Wilson Samaan, who accompanied him to claim the jackpot in Fresno.
In 2008, after an injury left him unable to work, Vidal found himself homeless. He relocated to the central coast in an attempt to rebuild his life, but he never imagined that a simple decision to buy lottery tickets would change everything.
At first, Vidal thought he had won $200, then $100,000. But it wasn’t until he shared the moment with Samaan, high-fiving and chatting about his prize, that he learned the true extent of his win—$1 million.
“I was like, huh?” Vidal recalled. “And that’s when I realized I’d won a million dollars.”
Now, with his newfound wealth, Vidal is focused on securing a stable home, complete with a bed and a couple of dogs. He also plans to invest his winnings to ensure long-term financial security. Though his story went viral after his win, Vidal intends to keep a low profile moving forward.
