A man who had just moved to Maryland from Florida got the shock of his life when he scratched off a $50,000 top prize on a Big Money ticket—only two days into living in the state.
The recent Baltimore City resident walked into Daily Deals at Towson Town Center, picked up a $5 scratch-off, and discovered a life-changing surprise—despite not even knowing how Maryland’s scratch-offs worked.
“I didn’t believe it was real until I came to claim the prize,” he shared at Maryland Lottery headquarters, still reeling from the win.
The man said he’d dabbled in scratch-offs back in Florida since turning 18, but Maryland’s layout was new to him. When he saw “$50,000” appear after scanning the ticket, he assumed it was just advertising the top prize—not realizing he’d actually hit it.
But the moment of truth came when a clerk scanned the ticket.
“She completely lost it,” he laughed. “That’s when I knew it was real.”
Currently working in a restaurant and an avid golfer, the lucky winner plans to deposit the money into his savings.
The winning ticket was sold at 825 Dulaney Valley Road, earning the store a $500 bonus.
The Big Money scratch-off, released on February 10, has already crowned two top-prize winners. The first was an Upper Marlboro woman in late February. However, five top prizes still remain, along with a range of rewards from $5 to $5,000.
