For Todd White, Jr., 33, life has been anything but easy. Facing a tough financial patch, he and his wife were forced to leave their rented home and were dealing with the repossession of their truck—all while caring for their newborn baby girl.
But on a quiet Sunday night, everything changed.
After attending a baby shower, White pulled into Sheetz at 6633 Dorr Street around 10:30 p.m. to fill up his tank. He popped inside to grab some snacks—pretzels, fries, and a couple of $10 Monopoly Bonus Spectacular 50X scratch-off tickets.
Using a small $25 lottery win to fund his purchase, White scratched the tickets while pumping gas. Then came the shock.
“I saw it and I thought, ‘This can’t be real,’” he recalled. But it was. He had just hit the $500,000 top prize.
Still in disbelief, he scanned the ticket multiple times on the Ohio Lottery app, each time confirming the life-changing win. The next day, he verified it at the Ohio Lottery office in Toledo, where he submitted the paperwork to claim his prize.
After taxes—28% total—White will take home around $360,000.
Store manager Cat Clark, who’s worked at 13 Sheetz stores over the last decade, was stunned. “I’ve never seen a win this big,” she said.
White says the money will go toward buying a new home, clearing debt, and getting a car for his wife. But he’s keeping his day job at a flooring company, determined to stay grounded.
“I’m not quitting,” he said. “I want to manage this right.”
He’s also thankful for his fresh start. Having turned his life around after leaving prison five years ago, White says this win feels like a blessing.
“I’ve got two beautiful daughters and now, finally, a second chance.”
As news spreads, Clark expects more customers to test their luck at the station. Fellow Sheetz employee Wendy Bodi is already calling it a “lucky place”—she recently snagged $165 in smaller wins since the store opened.
White’s story is a reminder: sometimes, your next tank of gas could change everything.
