Island Luck: Martha’s Vineyard Resident Snags $1 Million ‘Jaws’ Lottery Win

Gecimar Silva, a resident of Martha’s Vineyard, just hit the jackpot, claiming a $1 million grand prize from the Massachusetts State Lottery. This significant win comes from the popular “Jaws” instant game, launched on March 26.

After 18 years on the island, where the iconic “Jaws” movie was filmed, Silva felt inspired to try his luck with the themed lottery ticket. His decision paid off handsomely as he became the third person to win the grand prize from this game.

Silva picked up his winnings at the Massachusetts Lottery headquarters in Dorchester on Friday, May 3. Opting for a lump sum, he received $650,000 before taxes. With the windfall, he plans to finally take a vacation, the first in 30 years, and he is eyeing a getaway to Florida.

The lucky ticket was purchased at Depot Market in Edgartown, which will receive a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.

All three $1 million prizes for the “Jaws” game have now been claimed. Lottery enthusiasts still have chances to win, though, with five Second Chance Drawings offering a “Jaws”-inspired trip to Martha’s Vineyard in the summer of 2025. During the visit, participants will compete in a “Jaws”-themed game show, with one player guaranteed to win $1 million.

Entrants for the Second Chance Drawings should submit their non-winning tickets via the official lottery website, masslottery.com.

The prize trip includes a three-night stay at the luxurious Harbor View Hotel and a suite of themed activities, including a “Jaws” movie screening and a “Shark Infested Waters” party.

The Massachusetts Lottery, a pioneer in themed lottery games, continues to offer unique experiences, making it more than just a chance to win—it’s an adventure.
